Selfies Going to the Dogs
Over the long weekend we took a trip to Antietam National Battlefield. Not only is it an incredible history lesson, but it’s really dog friendly. A perfect location for Harvey to try his paw at taking selfies. Prepare yourself for a lot of fun, because this week, selfies are going to the dogs for our 52 week project!
Dog Selfies!
Dogs, travel, history, and of course, photography are some of my most favorite things in life. So it is always fantastic when we have the opportunity to combine all of these things into one fun filled weekend. Living in Maryland, we are surrounded by all kinds of amazing history, from pre Revolutionaty times. to the war of 1812, to the Civil War and more, we have it all here! And the best part – many of these amazing sites are dog friendly!
It was a beautiful, albeit very, very, hot Labor Day weekend, so we took out time to cover the 11+ acres. Harvey could not have asked for a more beautiful location to snap off a few selfies. Although, I think he would have been very happy to have had his own personal air conditioning unit with him.
The monuments behind Harvey commemorate the American Civil War Battle of Antietam that occurred on September 17, 1862. It is the bloodiest one-day battle in American History. 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat. The battle marked the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North, and led to Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. It is sobering to think of the horror those brave men faced that day – these truly are hallowed grounds. So why did I choose this location to take silly selfies with my dog? Because I believe that it is because of the events that took place here that changed the course of history and helped to make this great nation what it is today. I’d like to think that these silly pictures will honor the young men who gave their all, and maybe that they would have brought a smile to their faces. It is with great reverence that we spent the day at Antietam and the memories of the history that we learned about will stay will us forever.
While this has nothing to do with Selfies or dogs, the following picture is a of a monument at the battlefield that I think is really beautiful. Look at how the American flag is draped over the top – it is incredible!
If you haven’t been to Antietam National Battlefield, I highly encourage you to do so! But for now, I hope you will enjoy lots of great selfie pictures taken by my friends and fellow pet photographers, because today the selfies are going to the dogs!!

Love that harvey’s arms were long enough to take his own photos….Marley had to use to step on a remote! 😉
Hi Bonnie!
I love these selfies! I’ve yet to try them with my dog.
Love the gorgeous cloud-filled blue skies – and the way you got Harvey to arrange himself so perfectly!
Harvey did an excellent job. So great to hear that there are so many wonderful pet friendly places to visit. Wants not to love about history, travel, and photography? This reminds me of my childhood vacations my parents would take me on. We always went someplace of historical significance…and I saw a lot of Civil War battlefields.
What an inspirational, informative and beautiful post. Gorgeous and silly pictures with a wonderful message. Thank you for taking the time to describe with such reverence where you were. 🙂
