Remembering Private Cody J. Orr
I hope you all had a FANTASTIC Christmas and New Year’s, and that as you read this, 2014 is the BEST year yet! Our holidays were outstanding, but it’s time for the BGP blog to get back to work!
I want to start off 2014 with a remembrance: When I first started this blog and project with the Warrior Canine Connection Honor Litter, I introduced the dogs one by one. If you’ve been following along, you probably also recall that each of these amazing animals is named for a serviceman or woman who was either killed or severely wounded in action. Besides highlighting the profound effect these animals have on those they serve and the people around them, we should take a moment to remember those for whom the dogs are named, and recognize their sacrifices.
January 17, 2014 marked the tenth anniversary of the death of Army Private First Class Cody J. Orr. He was on patrol near Taji, Iraq, when the Bradley Fighting Vehicle he was riding in detonated an improvised explosive device, killing him. He was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 20th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. Cody was from Ruskin, Florida, and as a teenager was said to be fond of his John Deere hat and big belt buckles. When he was killed, Private Orr left behind his young wife – the couple was preparing to celebrate their first anniversary. He was just 21 years old when he was killed.
This little guy, “Cody”, is named after Private Cody J. Orr — we will never forget his sacrifice.
Did you know Private Cody Orr? Perhaps you know his family? If so, we would love to hear from you!
Until next time, have joy in your heart, a smile on your face, and a dog by your side!
Bonnie
As I look into the eyes of WCC Cody the new born or the maturing eyes of WCC Cody the service puppy in training I see the honor and commitment of Private Cody Orr. As with each of the Warrior Canine Connection Honor Litter, I know that Private Cody’s name and legacy will live on in WCC Cody through service to another American Veteran who sacrificed so much for our Freedom. Thank you private Cody for your sacrifice.
It is so true, Roger! Well said – thank you!!
I’ve missed your posts Bonnie. (And You) So glad to see this one.
I served with Cody. He was actually with the 1st battalion 44th air defense artillery.
