How To Have Fun in Cape Cod With Your Dog!
We like to travel and we like to bring our Australian Cattle Dog, Harvey, with us whenever possible.
I’m always looking for great pet-friendly hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Today I’d like to tell you about our long weekend on Cape Cod…
Preparing For the Trip
The first thing I do when planning a trip is pull out The Dog Lover’s Companion to … in this case … New England.
I LOVE these books!
I know, I know, paper is passé, but these books contain quite a few nuggets that I’ve not seen online, and the town of Falmouth is one of these.
It’s a cute little town at the beginning of the Cape, so we decided to go with Green Harbor Waterfront in East Falmouth.
A Charming Little Motel in Falmouth
Green Harbor Waterfront is a charming motel located on a harbor inlet is affordable, informal, and both family and dog-friendly. It offers something for everyone. There are two separate pools, one for the kiddies and one for the rest of the family – sorry no dogs allowed in the pools.
But they have a little beach which is just perfect for your four-legged family member to take a dip! Also there is a dock where you can rent a boat, or you can just sit in a chair and read a book. Pretty much all of the rooms have 2 double beds and most have kitchen facilities.
The rooms are clean and comfortable and the pet fee very reasonable – just $10 per night.
Delightful Dog-Friendly Restaurants
During the days, we visited most of the small towns throughout Cape Cod.
Antique shops and fun little boutiques abound, and many were very pet friendly. And restaurants were plentiful – most were more than happy to let your furry friend join you (in the outdoor seating areas, of course).
A couple of our favorites were Tommy Doyle’s Irish Pub and Restaurant in Hyannis and Stewart’s Seafood Restaurant and Tavern in Eastham.
Both were super dog friendly (and super friendly in general), giving us a table with plenty of shade (and bringing Harvey a nice bowl of water).
The food was great!
I loved Stewart’s Seafood so much that I’d be willing to drive a few hours just for their food!
The fun, casual atmosphere, live music, and unique setup of this roadside restaurant reminded us of our days in Hawaii. They had regular tables inside and lots of picnic tables with umbrellas outside. Colorful New England-y décor and amazing food make this one a winner.
We actually stumbled on it quite by accident – heading back to our hotel from Provincetown on Rt 6, we decided to grab a bite. Turned down miserably by one not-so-dog-friendly restaurant (boo!), we spotted all the picnic tables in front of Stewart’s and gave it a try.
I have four words – Best. Lobster. Roll. Ever!
(Since our last visit, I’ve spoken with a number of friends that tried the Lobster Roll at Stewart’s and found it to be lacking that extra oomph. So, perhaps we went on an extremely good day!)
Enjoying the National Seashore
As for activities, our pick has to be Cape Cod National Seashore, which encompasses most of the beaches, sand dunes, salt marshes, beautiful lighthouses and seaside forests between Chatham and Provincetown, and spans some 40 miles.
Dogs are welcome year-round with some restrictions – they must be on a leash, and are not allowed on swimming beaches or biking/hiking trails. They are allowed on all beaches that are not part of lifeguard zones or a posted nesting area.
All in all, Cape Cod was a hit!
Until next time, have joy in your heart, a smile on your face, and a dog by your side!
